Compare the complete cost
Write down the furniture price, delivery, assembly, required accessories and optional services. A lower item price can become a higher total when important services are missing.
Keep the important details
Save the offer, product description and order confirmation. Ask for written confirmation of delivery promises and included services.
- Model, finish, material, dimensions and features match your choice.
- Delivery address, floor, access and final room location are agreed.
- Assembly, connection work and packaging removal are clearly distinguished.
- A delivery date or period is stated.
- Return terms and collection charges are understandable.
Ask about materials and maintenance
Check the actual construction and care instructions rather than relying on broad marketing terms. Where a product carries an environmental label, check its criteria and whether that exact model is covered. A label on one product does not certify every item from the same brand.
Inspect the delivery
Check packages, model details and visible damage. Photograph problems and report them clearly to the seller. Do not sign a statement you have not checked. What happens next depends on the purchase terms and applicable consumer protections.
Support and applications
Tax relief and local assistance are different routes
The federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit is non-refundable tax relief for eligible renovations, not a cash grant for an ordinary kitchen or furniture purchase. Eligibility includes a qualifying person and dwelling; portable furniture and household appliances are generally excluded. Provincial or territorial assistance has its own conditions.
Where to apply or ask
For federal tax relief, follow CRA’s Home Accessibility Expenses guidance. Ask your province or territory separately about adaptation programs before commissioning work.
What to prepare
- Evidence that the person and dwelling qualify.
- Contracts, itemised invoices and description of the adaptation.
- Supplier details, work dates, address and proof of payment.
- Keep supporting records; CRA says not to send them with the return unless requested.
When to act
Check eligibility before spending. Keep records and claim qualifying expenses on the relevant tax return. The linked CRA page currently explains tax year 2025; check the guidance for the year you claim.
The responsible body determines the documents required in your case. Send personal evidence through its official channel, not through WOHNALIO.
Buying furniture in Canada
A change-of-mind return is generally governed by the retailer’s policy; defective goods are a different matter. Check the policy before buying, including freight and custom-order exclusions. For unresolved disputes, consult your provincial or territorial consumer affairs office. Budget in CAD, with applicable taxes and delivery.
