Plan your room before you buy the furniture

Measure the room, try the walking routes and check delivery access. Avoid furniture that fits on paper but gets in the way at home.

Draw a practical floor plan

Record wall lengths, windows, radiators, sockets and the swing of doors. Measure recesses in more than one place because walls may not be square. Use one unit throughout and confirm which units the retailer uses.

Allow for using the furniture

Drawers, dining chairs, sofa beds and reclining footrests need space beyond the furniture footprint. A cabinet fitting against a wall does not mean its doors can open.

  • Mark the footprint with suitable removable tape or paper.
  • Walk the routes to the door, windows, bed and cupboards.
  • Repeat with drawers and doors open.
  • Allow for a walking aid or wheelchair if someone in the household uses one.

Check the whole delivery route

Compare packed dimensions and the heaviest component with entrances, stairs, lifts and tight corners. The final floor space does not prove a sofa can be carried in. Ask the delivery team to assess difficult access before ordering.

Turn the plan into a clear order

Record the model, configuration, dimensions and assembly service. A short measurement sheet and relevant access photos can help the retailer confirm suitability. Share only the information needed for delivery.
