Your starting point

FDA’s OTC hearing-aid category is for adults 18 or older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Prescription hearing aids and personal sound amplification products are different categories. Seek professional advice when symptoms or your level of difficulty make the right route unclear.

Establish the appropriate route

Read the FDA guidance and the product’s warnings before buying. Children and people with more severe hearing loss need a different route from OTC devices. Sudden hearing changes, pain, drainage or other warning signs warrant prompt medical advice rather than a shopping decision.

An assessment can help clarify the difficulty and available options even when a prescription is not required for an OTC purchase. Write down the situations that are hardest: a conversation at home, a group or a phone call.

Check whether setup is manageable

Ask whether the exact model needs a smartphone, a compatible app or an online account for fitting and adjustments. Check whether the person can handle the controls, charger and earpieces.

Request a demonstration of support: who answers, by which channel and at what hours? Ask what happens if an app stops working or a phone is replaced. A feature list does not establish that assistance will be available when needed.

Read the trial before placing the order

Record when the trial starts, how to request a return, any fitting or restocking charges, and who pays return shipping. Check whether accessories and opened consumables follow different rules.

Compare the total USD price of the pair, fitting or support package, charger, replacement parts and warranty. Ask what is covered after the trial and whether repairs require sending both devices away.

Use a short comparison record

Keep the exact model and seller details, quoted support terms and dated return conditions together. Note what you want to evaluate during the trial and who will help if adjustments are difficult.

Check the manufacturer’s current US service arrangements, not only a retailer’s old product page. This guide does not rank products or claim that we have tested them. Ask the relevant plan directly about any benefit rather than relying on a seller’s coverage statement.
