Start with an assessment of mobility, seating, transfers and the home environment. For Medicare coverage of power mobility, a treating provider’s face-to-face examination and written prescription are required; some power wheelchairs also require prior authorization.
Define the daily use with a qualified professional
Describe how the person moves at home, how they transfer, who assists and what activities they want to maintain. Ask which type of equipment and seating arrangement is appropriate. A long advertised driving range does not answer these questions.
Include the entrance, turning space, floor surfaces and where charging or storage could happen. Ask the assessor to explain any necessary changes before an order is placed.
Confirm the exact Medicare or plan route
Medicare Part B may cover medically necessary wheelchairs and scooters for eligible people. Check that the treating provider and DME supplier are enrolled and ask whether the supplier accepts assignment. Have the supplier explain any required prior authorization.
Obtain a written explanation of rent versus purchase and your costs. Do not assume a privately purchased travel scooter will be reimbursed afterward. Ask your plan about its own supplier and authorization requirements.
Compare delivery and ongoing support
Ask whether delivery includes assembly, fitting, instruction and a check of the home setup. Identify who provides local repairs, what parts are stocked and what happens if the equipment cannot be used while awaiting service.
Review the battery, charger, controller and seating warranties separately. Compare the complete USD price rather than an advertised starting price.

Verify every travel and vehicle claim
Ask the manufacturer and transport operator about the exact model, battery and handling requirements before arranging a trip. A retailer’s general statement about airline compatibility is not an airline’s approval.
For a vehicle, discuss secure loading and transport with an appropriate specialist. Record the heaviest component that must be lifted and who can handle it. Do not choose mobility equipment solely because it folds.
