Record windows, doors, ceiling height and existing water, waste, ventilation and electrical connections. List who cooks, what you store and whether you eat in the kitchen. Moving services can change the work and cost considerably; a cabinet plan alone cannot settle that.
Choose a layout you can use
A single run is straightforward to organise. An L-shaped layout can use a corner while leaving the room open. A U-shaped arrangement offers more working surface but needs enough space between runs. An island only helps if open appliance doors and everyday movement still work. Check the actual clearances required by appliance manufacturers.
Work through a normal meal
Imagine taking food from storage, washing, preparing, cooking and clearing away. Keep useful work surface near the tasks that need it. Check handle reach, drawer opening and comfortable working height with the people who will use the kitchen.
- Choose appliances by dimensions and installation requirements, not just the product name.
- Allow access to service points and replaceable appliances.
- Check ventilation, lighting and the location of switches.
- Have electrical, gas and plumbing work assessed and performed by appropriately qualified trades.
