Attendance Allowance is a non-means-tested benefit for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision because of a disability or health condition. The decision is based on the help reasonably needed, even if nobody currently provides it.
Describe the help you need, not only the diagnosis
Explain what happens on typical and difficult days, including prompting, physical help, supervision and night-time needs. State how often the difficulty occurs, how long tasks take and what could happen without help.
- washing, dressing and using the toilet
- taking medicines or following treatment
- moving safely around the home
- communication, confusion or distress
- supervision to avoid substantial danger
Prepare evidence before completing the form
A medication list, care plan, clinic letters and a short diary can make the pattern of need easier to understand. Keep a copy of the completed form and supporting documents.
