Four decisions, not one
A preferred destination is the beginning of a plan. First establish the residence route for every person moving. Then confirm pension and healthcare arrangements, check the housing contract and retain a realistic return option. Buying a home does not settle the other questions.
- Passport and existing residence rights
- All pension providers and other regular income
- Written healthcare confirmation and local registration
- Housing, moving and return reserves
Starting from the United Kingdom
This guide is for readers planning a move from the United Kingdom. British citizenship, another passport and any Withdrawal Agreement rights lead to different residence routes. A new British retiree cannot use EU citizenship rules solely because they receive a UK pension. Confirm your right to live in the destination country before signing a long tenancy.

Healthcare and support before you move
Confirm your healthcare route before moving. A UK-issued S1 may be relevant for an eligible State Pension recipient, but entitlement and local registration must be checked. A GHIC or EHIC for a temporary visit is not a general substitute for resident healthcare. Check State Pension payments with the International Pension Centre and workplace or private pensions with their own providers.

Separate tax questions from residence rules
List each income source, assets, retained home and planned pattern of stays for a suitably qualified cross-border tax adviser. Do not use a generic day count as a complete tax test. Keep advice and assumptions dated; a tax advertisement may concern a different year or a different kind of income.
Keep a route back
Agree who can help if a home becomes unsuitable or a relationship changes. Check where you could stay, how insurance would resume and what moving back would cost. Avoid irreversible commitments until the essential written decisions are available.
